Oriental Medicine includes acupuncture (which may include needles, seeds, electronic or laser stimulation), moxibustion, body work (muscular release similar to massage), cupping, exercise, herbal and dietary therapies. It is a whole person approach to health and healing, balancing and unblocking the energies within our bodies in order to restore wellbeing and vitality.

Herbal therapy begins with a detailed consultation and Chinese medical diagnosis.

Herbs may be dispensed in raw, or bulk form, with the dried herbs in their natural root, leaf, twig and berry state. This is often the most effective, least expensive, and most time consuming of our options. The formula is made for the individual’s specific complaints on the day of the office visit, and the patient is required to boil the herbs into a tea which they drink daily. I prefer the taste of these herbs to the powdered variety.

Some of these formulas can be very effective in smaller, ground doses, which can help minimize preparation times and expense.

Powdered herbs have already been boiled and dried into an instant, just-add-water tea. They can be modified to address all the patient’s symptoms. They are easy to prepare, wherever you have hot water, but can taste bad and are more expensive. You can either drink a small, concentrated amount, or further dilute your prescription with more water. If you still find drinking the preparation difficult, ask your herbalist if you can add honey or follow your tea with some raisins.

The small dose required with herbal tinctures is very easy to take. As they are prefabricated, they are relatively expensive, and less specific to the individual’s complaints. Sometimes the formula will be a perfect fit.

Herbal patent pills are a simple way to aid your health. The Chinese form can be very inexpensive. Modern formulas from the US can be more highly adapted to contemporary illnesses, are more thoroughly quality controlled, and therefore more expensive.

Bach Flower Remedies are fully customized homeopathic drops which subtly treat emotional or behavioral issues.

Our office is stocked with a full range of homeopathic remedies based on the school of Homotoxicology. This is a gentle medicine which meshes wonderfully with other treatments including Western pharmaceuticals.

Tong Ren is a highly focused energy healing utilizing acupuncture principles either with or without needles. Channel blockages are addressed, emphasizing nerve and arterial supply, venous return, and endocrine output. Developed by Tom Tam of Quincy, MA, this unique system has had amazing results with severe, chronic cases and cancers. Healing sessions can be private, communal, or distant, meaning the individual seeking help need not be present.

There is a widespread international network of Tong Ren practitioners and group workshops called “Guinea Pig Classes.” Lynn MacKesson and Van Brown previously ran one of these weekly healing workshops in Gales Ferry, CT. They have every intention of getting another workshop together when schedules permit.
