Western science has no simple answer for how acupuncture works.  There are many theories about the needles accessing nerves or neurotransmitters, but there is no one answer.  As acupuncture is studied, each point is found to have unique actions, indeed adjacent acupoints may have completely unrelated effects.  These include, but are not limited to, stimulating electrical impulses, muscle relaxation, muscle action (including peristalsis), anti-inflammatory processes, inflammatory process, enzymatic release, neurotransmitter release or inhibition.
